Deepfakes and voice cloning

A voice message in a loved one's voice, a video call with your boss's face: technology can fake both. How to protect yourself and your family with a family code word and the "I'll call you back" rule.

"Mum, it's me..."

Aysel's mother receives a voice message in a messaging app. It's Aysel's voice: the same tone, the same "mummy dear": "Mum, my phone broke, I'm writing from a friend's number. I urgently need 500 AZN, send it to this card and I'll explain tonight."

Her mother has already opened her banking app. But Aysel is calmly sitting at work and hasn't sent anything.

A voice is no longer proof

Modern software can imitate a person's voice from a short social media video or voice message. The caller's number can be faked too.
