The 50/30/20 rule and making it your own
A simple rule for splitting income into needs, wants and savings — and how to adapt it to a real income.
Three envelopes
Imagine that as soon as you get paid, you split the money into three envelopes. That’s exactly what the 50/30/20 rule suggests:
- 50% — needs (housing, food, transport, utilities, loan payments)
- 30% — wants (cafés, clothes, fun, gifts)
- 20% — savings and paying debts off early
Example: 1,000 AZN
With an income of 1,000 AZN: 500 AZN for needs, 300 AZN for wants, 200 AZN for savings.
