How Scammers Think

Scammers hack people, not technology. Learn to recognise their five main levers: urgency, authority, fear, greed and secrecy.

Friday, 9:40 p.m.

Aysel is riding the metro home after a long day, scrolling through her phone. Suddenly a call: "Hello, Ms Aysel, this is your bank. Right now 850 AZN is being taken from your card. We need you to confirm quickly to stop it."

Her heart races. The voice is polite, they know her name, it all sounds serious. Aysel almost read out the code that had just arrived on her phone...

The key idea

A scammer usually doesn't break into any system. They rush and frighten a person and leave no time to think. If Aysel hands over the code herself, no protection can help.

In this lesson we'll look inside the scammer's toolbox. A person who recognises the trick is very hard to fool.
